Pittsburgh Pirates...One Year Ago

Good Evening,

The Pirates defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers this afternoon 6-3 at PNC Park. The win gave them another series win and their 41st win overall. I thought it would be interesting to look at the team at this point in the season, compared to this time last season.

2013 Pirates on June 16th
Defeated the Dodgers 6-3 in Pittsburgh  Box Score
41-28 Overall (3rd place, 3 Games Back in the NL Central)
Record Breakdown: 25-13 (Home) 16-15 (Road)
Runs Scored: 261 Runs Allowed: 243
Pedro Alvarez and Alex Presley each homered in the 6-3 win

2012 Pirates on June 16th
Defeated the Indians 9-2 in Cleveland  Box Score
33-31 Overall (2nd place, 4 Games Back in the NL Central)
Record Breakdown: 19-11 (Home) 14-20 (Road)
Runs Scored: 213 Runs Allowed: 239
Pedro Alvarez and Alex Presley each homered in the 9-2 win

Looking at the numbers and the results of each game and the season overall , there are some striking similarities. The one that was most interesting to me was the fact that Alex Presley and Pedro Alvarez each had a home run in both games. Alvarez's numbers have been better to this point compared to a year ago. He has five more home runs, 13 more runs batted in, and his average in 2013 is .213, compared to .196 in 2012.

There is also a noticeable improvement in the runs scored this season with this years team scoring 48 more runs than the team had at this point last year.

Closer Jason Grilli has 25 saves, including one today against the Dodgers. Last season, closer Joel Hanrahan had 17 saves by this point in the season, but hadn't recorded a save since June 9th.

It's still early and I think all of us who cheer on the black and gold hope that this season ends on a better not. Looking at the numbers this season, there is a nine game improvement from last season and the team does have several different pieces. Let's hope these new pieces along with the returning players can help to Raise the Jolly Roger all summer.
